Do you need an International Driving Permit in Italy?

The short answer

If your driving licence was issued outside the European Union — the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom after Brexit in certain cases — Italian law requires you to carry an International Driving Permit alongside your national licence.

It is not a licence. It is an official translation of the one you already hold, and it is worthless on its own: you must carry both, together, every time you drive.

Why people skip it, and why that is a mistake

Plenty of visitors rent cars in Italy without one and nothing happens. The rental desk does not always ask, and a routine drive rarely ends in a document check. This is the reason the myth persists that the permit is optional.

It stops being optional in exactly the two moments when it matters.

At a police check, driving without it is an administrative offence with a fine, and the vehicle can be held until someone with valid documents arrives.

After an accident, the consequences are larger. Insurance policies are written on the assumption that the driver is legally entitled to drive. If you are not, the insurer has grounds to contest the claim, and you are exposed for damage to the vehicle and to others.

The permit costs about as much as a pizza. The exposure without it is measured in thousands.

How to get one

Before you travel — this is the important part. An International Driving Permit is issued only in the country that issued your licence. You cannot obtain one in Italy, and no Italian office can help you once you have arrived.

In the United States, AAA and AATA issue them, in person or by post, usually the same day at a branch. You need your valid licence, passport photos and a small fee.

In Canada, the CAA. In Australia, the state automobile associations. In the United Kingdom, the Post Office.

It is valid for one year and there is no test involved — it is a booklet with your details translated into several languages.

What else to carry

Your national licence, always: the permit alone is not valid.

Your passport, since the rental company will need the same document you used to book.

A credit card in the driver's name, for the deposit. Debit cards are frequently refused.

Note that your national licence must still be valid for the whole rental period, and that many companies apply a young-driver surcharge or minimum age. Ask before you book, not at the desk.

If your licence is European

Nothing to do. An EU or EEA licence is valid in Italy as it stands, with no translation and no permit required. Carry the licence itself, not a photocopy.
